Erwin Vast graduated in computing science at the University of Groningen in
- Since May 2013 he is working as a scientific programmer in the Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam.
He works partly in the Image Registration group and has set up a new infrastructure based on the open-source framework XNAT. This infrastructure provides a central place for the storage of both imaging data and image- derived results, which is very useful in the context of multi-center imaging studies and other collaborative research projects where image data needs to be shared.
Furthermore, he is working in the area of image guidance in interventions. The primary field of interest is the use of electromagnetic sensors to provide a real-time positioning system for ultrasound scans. This allows the fusion of pre-operative CT/MRI scans with intra-operative ultrasound scans. Erwin is also working on (fast) implementations of 2D/3D and 3D/3D registrations for improved image guidance.
