Augmented Reality in the Operating Room day - June 10

Ever wondered what surgery looks like through the lens of augmented reality? On 10 June 2026, we will be at the Cube —right inside the operating room floor— to give you a live, hands-on demonstration of this technology which could revolutionize surgical procedures.

You have probably heard of virtual reality (VR) where you can immerse yourself in a fully virtual environment. Augmented reality (AR) allows you to look through your real world and project additional virtual “holograms”.

Within the IGIT group, the XR group conducts cutting edge research on the use of AR for image-guided interventions, where software and hardware solutions allowing to register, track and visualize patient data and surgical planning on the patient are developed.

augmented reality demos

Together with Annabel Groenenberg from the Innovation lab (I-Lab), Professor Theo van Walsum and researchers Mohamed Benmahdjoub, Abdullah Thabit, Jiaqi Tang will present a few demos of their research projects. The goal is to introduce their work in the past couple of years, bring the technology closer to clinical OR personnel (i.e., surgeons, nurses, technical physicians), and potentially forge new collaborations with interested parties. The organizers will be present for demos but also for discussing ideas and potential projects.

Some of the demos on the 10th:

  • AR Visualization of patient data
  • AR guidance for External ventricular drain (EVD) placement
  • AR navigation in Rib fracture surgery
  • AR visualization of Aneurysm

There are no requirements for attendance, please feel free to drop by on the 10th of June starting 10:00 AM in the Cube at the OR floor.
