PhD defense Xianjing Liu

Xianjing Liu (a.k.a Lau) successfully defended his PhD thesis “3D facial shape analysis: Unraveling environmental, genetic, and health connections through AI-driven methodological advancements”!!

On May 14, Lau succesfully defended his PhD thesis: ‘3D facial shape analysis: Unraveling environmental, genetic, and health connections through AI-driven methodological advancements’. In November 2019, Xianjing started his PhD at the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam (BIGR), department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Erasmus MC. The PhD project was entitled “3D facial shape analysis”. He was supervised by Eppo Wolvius and Gennady Roshchupkin.

Lau investigated the interpretability and confounding challenges in deep learning, with applications to population-based epidemiological, clinical, and genetic studies. During his PhD he worked closely with other departments, such as department of Genetic Identification, department of Dermatology, Erasmus MC. He also has external collaborations with the school of public health of Harvard University, the school of public health and primary care of Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the school of design of Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Since November 2023, Xianjing started as a postdoctoral researcher at department of Internal Medicine, and BIGR, department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Erasmus MC. He will continue his research career and focus on the image and genomic data analysis.
